Creative Event Planning Opportunity!

Our project is growing!! After launching Unbridaled Expo this year, we are looking to expand everything (seriously, everything!!!) for our next show, including another member for our team:

Creative, excited, energetic person needed to help plan and execute Philadelphia's alternative wedding expo. We have one very successful expo under our belt and are building this year's to be more of what we are: local, handmade and green solutions that allow individuality to be the focus of the event, not the brand name or money spent. Assistance needed with locating and securing sponsors, coordinating the fashion show, and working with local vendors as well as event-specific tasks.

Check out the slide show from the Daily News:
http://www.philly.com/dailynews/gallery/Unbridaled_Fashion_Show_and_Expo.html

and our site: http://unbridaledexpo.com/

If you are looking for a creative opportunity to be a part of an industry project with a serious heart, here is your chance!! This internship will expose the right person to business development, event management, community outreach and time management. We need someone who can and wants to contribute toward being part of something new and growing.

The right person will be organized, personable, efficient, creative, and self motivated. If you are interested, let us know why and little bit about your experience. Please forward to unbridaledexpo@gmail.com. Thanks!

In 1999 he moved to the UK and started doing A&R for Organic Records, as well as producing psytrance under the name Mr. Biscuit. Following several releases on Organic Records under this name, he met Colin OOOD and together they started VOICE OF COD. Andrew has since compiled "Invasion from Hyperspace" on Organic Records, and has released a full length album under the VOICE OF COD name. He has DJed at most of the major psytrance parties in the UK as well as internationally in Portugal, USA, Greece, Germany, Holland, Spain, Switzerland, and Australia. In addition, he has also played on the progressive house scene in the UK, USA and Madiera.
Guests from England - Need Ideas - Thanks

I am so thrilled! But a little worried. September 9 thru 17th I am entertaining two international guests from England. They are both from Burton-Upon-Trent (the brewing capitol of England), which is a small town. They are both in their late 30's. I know there is a pub/bar in the Northern Liberties area that boasts it is somewhat "English". But aside from that - I would like to take them to a few places that won't overwhelm them, but where they can see a mixture of ages and be able to dance - meet and greet people. Center City is best - because we will have to take cabs.

One man is an artist, the other is from a wealthy family who owns a huge business there. Both are straight. The artist is with me, the weathy one is SINGLE! Both are fringe types, complete with thick accents. Both are very down to earthy, funny and open-minded.

Any suggestions on where to take them and what to show them??? Restaurants, clubs, pubs, events???

If you've never been to New Hope, an hour north of Philly right along the Delaware, you should check it out. (It's still in 215)

It's an alternative lifestyle community, that accepts everyone. The motorcyclists hang out at Fran's Pub. The yuppies at Havana's. The hippies at Jon & Peters. The gays & lesbians at the Raven.

There are lots of nice shops, antique stores, and offbeat stores like "Loves Saves the Day" (vintage clothing). Also plenty of good places to eat like Marsha Browns, the Mansion and Martines.

If you decide to come out on a weekend, drop me a line and i'll play tour guide.

I saw OneDream at the International House last night, and it was awesome! The musicians and performers were amazing, but the costumes are the delightful highlight--just stunning. The show is done in blacklight, and the costumes and special effects are wildly trippy, including ethereal swimming fish and fluttering butterflies weaving around the dancers. The little kids I saw in the audience were totally captivated; if you've got kids, take them to see this show. The show is a collaboration by Archedream and One. They have one more show today (Sunday) at 3 p.m. Go see them if you can!

Academics dispute prevalence of politically-driven retribution by liberal professors.

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 9) – A Lancaster County lawmaker cited unofficial allegations of political bias in the classroom against at least 30 Temple University professors during a legislative hearing into student academic freedom Monday.

But the university president said officials had searched records and failed to find "any instances" of problems.

After the hearing, Rep. Gibson Armstrong, R-Lancaster, explained that he has 40 pages of e-mails detailing the complaints. But neither he nor anyone testifying before the House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Student Academic Freedom Monday discussed specific allegations. The hearings were held pursuant to House Resolution 177, which forbade any direct claims against faculty without first giving the accused advance notice to respond.

Still, Logan Fisher, a Temple senior and vice chairman of the College Republicans, said a liberal bias is alive and thriving in Temple's classrooms.

Fisher’s primary complaint was that professors are often one-sided in presenting their political views in class.

“I’m not saying you can’t talk about this or you can’t talk about that. By all means talk about it but talk about both sides,” said Fisher, a business law major.

Temple President David Adamany and free speech advocate Robert O’Neil didn't see eye to eye with Fisher on his assessment of liberal bias in academia.

They seemed to echo the comments of Rep. Dan Frankel, R-Allegheny, who characterized the hearings on student academic freedom as a “solution in search of a problem.”

Adamany told the committee that “we have reviewed our records and we do not find any instances in which students have complained about inappropriate intrusions of political advocacy by teachers in their courses. Nor have we found instances of complaints by students that they were improperly graded because of the views they set forth in their courses.”

O’Neil, who runs the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression, said that “recent reports of ideological bias in the classroom are greatly exaggerated.

"Having taught at universities like [the University of California] that might be identified as liberal and others like [the University of Virginia] that are viewed as conservative, I would insist that variations among professors and their politics are far fewer than the media might lead you to believe.”

After the hearing, Armstrong said that he began looking into student academic freedom after receiving a call from a constituent.

“The security of free speech on college campuses is vitally important to the continuation of a free society,” Armstrong said after the hearing.

“We know there is a national issue with a lack of diversity of thought on college campuses,” he added, leafing through a binder of news and academic articles attesting to liberal biases among university professors. In some departments, he said, the ratio can be 10:1 of liberal to conservative professors.

O’Neil, in his testimony, cautioned against such conclusions based on party affiliation.

“How a person votes does not necessarily correlate in any way to how a person teaches or what that person writes,” he said.

When asked by Armstrong if he was ever quizzed on his party affiliation in interviews for faculty positions, O’Neil said he was not, and if he had been asked, he would not have answered. “I don’t think it’s anybody’s business what my politics are,” he said.

Rep. Dan Surra, D-Elk, who made a point of saying that he thought these hearings were a “colossal waste of time and taxpayer money,” told O’Neil, “You’re right to say you should not answer that question (about party affiliation); you should not have to answer that question.”

Armstrong was the most vigorous questioner –- regardless of the testifier’s message.

He pressed Adamany about unofficial allegations from Temple students, including claims that professors came to class wearing anti-Bush buttons and spoke derogatively of military personnel.

Armstrong also pressed Fisher about why students have sat on their complaints about professors rather than follow the university’s grievance process.

“It’s time that they speak their minds or quit complaining,” Armstrong said.

He also asked Adamany how the university would protect students too intimidated to speak out against a professor.

On that point, Adamany said, “It’s like whistleblower laws we have in the commonwealth and the nation.” Temple – like any institution – has an obligation to protect the student whistleblower, he said.

Responding to Armstrong’s questions about why students haven't filed formal complaints about problem professors with the university, Fisher said many fear retribution or ridicule from the professor.

“I thought professors were supposed to encourage a diversity of viewpoints in the classroom,” Armstrong said in response.

“So did I,” Fisher replied.

Jeff Solow, a professor of violoncello and chamber music at Temple, also read a statement on behalf of Faculty Senate President Jane Evans, who was traveling this week. He said that Temple is a diverse institution, and –- echoing Adamany -– he outlined the grievance procedures for students with a complaint about a professor.

Solow said there was no need for state legislation “for something that’s being done effectively on the local level.”

Monday’s public hearing at Temple was the start of a second round of hearings before the Select Committee on Student Academic Freedom. Two days of hearings were held at the University of Pittsburgh in November.

Testimony will continue Tuesday morning at Temple's North Philadelphia campus, culminating with David Horowitz, president of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture. Horowitz is a conservative activist who has argued that universities are too dominated by liberal faculties.

Committee Chairman Thomas Stevenson, R-Allegheny, said that at least two more hearings will be held in March and May in the Midstate. House Resolution 177 requires that the committee report its findings to the full House no later than Nov. 30.

A CITY WITH OPEN ARMS

PHILLY COMMITS TO TAKING IN 5,000 PEOPLE DISPLACED BY HURRICANE

By BARBARA LAKER

lakerb@phillynews.com

AS EARLY AS this afternoon, dozens of New Orleans evacuees will walk past the American flag that flies at half mast at the Wanamaker School in North Philadelphia and through the front doors to see a simple hand-painted sign: "Welcome to Philly."

The memories of bodies floating in flood waters or rotting in mud will surely haunt them in the aftermath of a disaster that has become America's disgrace.

But Philadelphia city employees and volunteers worked around the clock for 30 hours to create a sanctuary for the weary, vacant-eyed survivors of Hurricane Katrina who escaped, in many cases, with nothing but life.

Blue cots with blankets and pillows are set up in classrooms inside this school at Cecil B. Moore Avenue and 11th Street, which was not going to be used for classes this year. Some 23 showers have been installed. There's a gym with upscale workout equipment; a phone bank to call relatives and computers to search for missing ones. There's a fully stocked medical office, cribs, books, toys, clothes, food and water. Most items were donated by businesses and individuals.

An air-conditioning unit has been hooked up, and security will be provided to protect everyone inside.

"I want them to come here and say they are proud to be an American," said Mayor Street, who led a tour of the Wanamaker School with Rob Hess, deputy managing director, and a host of other officials yesterday afternoon.

"Because right now they must not feel good to be American. They think our country has forgotten about them. They think we don't care about them. And that's a tragedy... I think they've been unfairly treated," Street said.

"I will meet and touch every single one of them. I will tell them this city is with you. This city rallies around you."

Judge bars Philadelphia from firing Muslim firefighter over his beard

By Maryclaire Dale
ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:27 p.m. June 1, 2005

PHILADELPHIA – A Muslim firefighter who refuses to shave his beard on religious grounds cannot be fired while his legal case unfolds, a city judge ruled in a test of the state's religious freedom law.

The Philadelphia Fire Department, like most big-city departments, prohibits beards and mustaches, citing safety reasons. Facial hair, the department says, can prevent firefighters from getting a seal when they wear respirators.

Firefighter Curtis De Veaux agreed to shave when he joined the department two years ago. But as his faith deepened, he decided he was no longer willing to, he said Wednesday.

De Veaux also said he has a skin condition that makes it painful to shave. He added that he can get a proper seal on a respirator despite his beard.

Mary Catherine Roper, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer representing De Veaux, said Friday's ruling means her client must be allowed to work and get paid while the case continues.

De Veaux, 25, was suspended without pay Feb. 2 and told he would be fired.

The three-year-old Pennsylvania Religious Freedom Protection Act allows people to challenge laws that interfere with the practice of religion. Similar laws were passed in other states after a federal religious freedom law was overturned in 1997.

Anne Barden, a city solicitor handling the case, did not immediately return a telephone message Wednesday. In court documents, she said the city has a legitimate need to enforce the beard ban.

Move from SF to Philly?

Hey folks,
I'm currently living in SF and loving it, but would like to move on to another great city to experience something new. I'm considering Philly. I work in Finance and my husband is a massage therapist. We don't have kids and like to drink a lot. Based on that bio, what do you think? Do we fit in? Do you recommend the move? Tell me what you think. Thanks!!

Tonight a little kitty found its way into my building.
I took it door to door thinking it belonged to someone in the building... it was all sweet and cuddly as I scooped it up and carried it around... although he has claws, never once took them out when I carried him around... he waits at my apt door now and follows me thru the building...
I would give him a home in a second, but my space is just too small for me and 2 cats...
If anyone out there has the love for this little guy, please let me know asap... I want to avoid having to take him to a shelter.

To all those who know and love Philly--I've never been here before and I have 2 days to get a feel for the city. I'll take your recommendations for how you think I should spend my days and nights for these two days. A little touristy is ok, but I really want to get a feel for the place.
Thanks!

Legendary Philadelphia original live music venue Grape Street Philadelphia (GSP) – formerly known as The Grape Street Pub - has announced the opening of a new, larger venue and entertainment complex.

GSP has been a staple in the Philadelphia original music scene for over a decade. Recognized for being one of the best live music venues along the Northeast corridor, GSP has also played host to nationally recognized recording artists that have included Jeff Buckley; Vertical Horizon; Jeffery Gaines; Martin, Modeski & Wood; Chris Barron; DJ Jazzy Jeff; The Roots; Seether and many others.

Building on a tradition for booking quality original music, Grape Street Philadelphia continues to break new talent that includes recently signed (by Clive Davis, who visited the club) J Records recording act Silvertide, Isle of Q (Universal), Tapping the Vein (Nuclear Blast), Familiar 48 (MCA), The Red King (Sony), Howie Day (Epic) and others who are garnering industry attention.
Although the club will be moving off of Grape Street proper, it will be maintaining the Grape Street name and reputation that it has worked to establish for more than a decade. In order to more accurately reflect the larger size and expanded services of the new complex in the name, Grape Street owners Joseph Cahill and Robert Coyle decided to replace the cozy sounding ‘Pub’ name with ‘Philadelphia’. Doing so also allows them to maintain use of the familiar ‘GSP’ initials.

The current GSP location is a converted row home offering only 1400 square feet of operating space on each of its two floors for patrons, performers and bar alike. Despite the fact that this small performing area proved to be somewhat limiting, the club has assembled one of the best sound and stage lighting systems on the East coast for a club of equal size.

The new GSP, located at 4100 Main Street, is only a few blocks North of the current location in the building formerly housing the Chemistry nightclub. This structure, a four story “L” shaped building next to the famed Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant, is a former textile mill and offers a spacious 7,000 square feet of space per floor with fifteen foot high ceilings. This added elbowroom will allow GSP to provide far more than their customary hot entertainment and cold libations to their patrons.

The new GSP Music Complex will be operating on both the first and second floors of the building. According to Cahill, the new location will be a full-service, one stop entertainment complex for the performing artist.

“ We are excited for this move and what it will allow us to offer to the original music scene in the greater Philadelphia region,” said Cahill. “The new GSP Music Complex will provide artists resources and tools for music performance, production, recording, marketing and networking” he concluded.

Walking in the front door that faces Main Street places visitors in the front room performance area with ample seating and a large concrete constructed bar with a black granite top. The room to the left of the main bar will be used primarily for acoustic acts, with a lounge feel and table service for late night entertainment. A light menu will also be served in the room to the right of the main bar, consisting of finger foods, salads, and appetizers with a full catering menu for happy hours, parties and special events.

The DJ room will round out this front room. Dj’s from the Philly Skratch Makhaniks Crew which includes: Excel, Jayski, Sat One, Kwestion, Adam Bomb, Aktive, and Rab will be spinning 7 days a week. The new Dj booth in this room will feature, 4 turntables, 2 mixers and 2 CD pads providing opportunities for multiple Dj’s to spin and mix their music.

Passing through this room to the back “L” section of the building, customers will be taken into the main stage performance area with a 300-spectator capacity. This room will house a large stage, full concert lighting and sound system, light and sound control booth, a main bar, and access to the enclosed outdoor deck. Accessorized with the latest in hi-tech sound, lights, and video equipment, this room will also allow GSP the ability to book larger national acts.

The main stage will be designed with the performing artist in mind offering load-in access directly from the club’s parking lot to an enclosed “green room” staging area behind the main stage. Here the bands can setup their gear ahead of time and carry it directly onto the stage through a doorway located in the back wall of the stage. In addition, this room provides an area for performers to network and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow performers before and after their performances. Large screen TV’s are located throughout the first floor projecting the current live act on the main stage in addition to advertisements and resource information.

Outdoors from this main stage room customers can enjoy themselves on the spacious enclosed 90-foot deck skirting the banks of the scenic Manayunk Canal on one side and the club parking lot on the other. This room will be open all seasons functioning as an overflow and merchandising room. For special fair weather occasions, GSP will also provide live entertainment in the parking lot and deck areas.

These three ground level performance areas will play host to nearly every genre of performing artist seven days a week and easily lend themselves to the addition of 18 and over performances when desired.

The second floor of the complex will be a unique and valued asset to area performing artists. Here they will find a myriad of essential business offices all focused on assisting the emerging artists in their bid for increased industry recognition. In addition to the GSP corporate offices, artists will find representation from such companies as GSP Productions, Discmakers, Music Training Center, Origivation Magazine, Precision Guitar Tek, Music Workshop, Guitar Center, Impact Artist Promotions, Reel2Real Film Company and Neutron Entertainment among others.

These offices will house nearly every essential service for the performing artist under one convenient roof including recording and production, CD duplication, instrument repair and technical work, sale of performance supplies and accessories, marketing and advertising products and services, and more. Also on the second floor will be a retail store where customers can purchase CD’s and promotional merchandise representative of both GSP and the artists who perform there.

In the back “L” section of the second floor, 5 recording and mixing studios will be used by GSP Productions producers working in various genre’s of music, including Rock, Singer-songwriter, R&B, Funk and Hip Hop. The Main control room will be tied into the 1st floor main performance stage for top-notch live recordings. In addition, GSP will utilize this space as a showcase area to present select performances to record industry A&R talent scouts.

A further bonus of this building for GSP lies on the third floor. There are housed the offices of international concert promoter Jack Utsick Presents N.E. Corridor (Matchbox 20, Lynyrd Skynryd, Aerosmith, etc.). Having already established a working relationship with this in-house presence directly facilitates the plan for GSP to book larger national acts on their new main stage.

To round out the dramatic physical upgrade of the club, GSP’s former website (grapestreetpub.com) was completely redesigned and launched as grapestreet.com on January 5th, 2004. GSP enlisted the services of Gilbertsville, PA based Impact Artist Promotions (IAP) to both design and host their new site. IAP, a multimedia marketing provider exclusively serving the performing artist, formed a strategic alliance with GSP in October of 2003 in order to further the advancement of emerging original artists.

The new grapestreet.com, receiving in excess of 500,000 hits monthly, offers all of the information that grapestreetpub.com offered in an organized, professional, and attractive site. Performance schedules, news, special events, featured artist sections, message board, hundreds of performance photos, and hundreds of megabytes of audio and video downloads are available to satisfy performers, fans, and curious visitors alike.

Many new website features directly reflect the focus of the new GSP Music Complex in providing essential tools to the performing artists. One of the standout features of the new website is the electronic press kit (EPK) section. Custom code written exclusively for GSP, the EPK’s offer new artists who can’t afford a full website a valuable, all encompassing, high profile tool for marketing their music professionally. The EPK’s are also indispensable to more established artists who already have a full website as the industry tool of choice for sending and receiving press kits.

For viewers, the EPK’s offer quick and concise access to all of the essential information of the performing artist including photos, biography, and performance schedule and audio/video samples. These kits can be viewed live on the Internet, sent easily via Email, and printed in easy to read format.

For the artist, this EPK tool greatly streamlines the artist’s process of promoting themselves to clubs, music festivals, and record labels professionally for only pennies a day. It also gives them a significant credible presence with a club that possesses great original musical notoriety in the Northeast. This growing library of EPK artists on grapestreet.com is quickly developing into a highly valued talent resource tool for booking agents and record industry A&R agents alike.

Additional Information on Grape Street Philadelphia and their affiliates can be found at www.grapestreet.com or by calling (215) 483-7084.

What Do You Love About Philly...?

Where I come from I love the love that is shared in my neighborhood. I even love the fact that those who don't love keep it real I can live with that. But I love Philly because it's real and it's true to itself. I love Philly summers, driving along Kelly drive and West River Drive or riding the same route on my bike and feeling the clean air blowing in your face. I love the fountain on Logan circle especially at on a warm summer night. I lovve mustard pretzels and water ice, I love going to the park and taking a swim, I love how people give you your "props" when you got respect like that. What can I say...I just love this place. And what about you? What's your favorite obsession for things Philadelphian?

Ugly. Unstylish. Unfriendly.?!

Magazine says Philly ranks low on looks, style and personality

By Alfred Lubrano
Inquirer Staff Writer

Ugly. Unstylish. Unfriendly.

Another national magazine has taken a tire-iron to our ego, busting on Philadelphia for its perceived shortcomings.

This time, though, we've piled on by dissing ourselves.

In an Internet survey of 500,000 people by Travel + Leisure magazine, along with AOL Travel, Philly ranked as the city with the least attractive, least stylish, and some of the least friendly people out of a group of 25 cities.

That's bad enough. But, according to the survey, many locals agreed with the out-of-towners, flagellating themselves as colossally unpretty, significantly lacking in style, and fairly hard to get along with.

"Are you kidding?" asks a disbelieving Mindy Sills, a fashion expert with John Robert Powers Modeling, Finishing School & Agency. "Really, we rated last in style and looks? How dare they say such mean things?"

The results suggest that the town needs to be Queer-Eyed for an emergency fashion makeover, then maybe head-shrunk to bolster its woefully lacking civic self-esteem.

"Philadelphians seem to have accepted the unflattering picture of themselves that others have," says Temple University psychologist Frank Farley. "This cries out for therapy on a grand scale."

A little history is in order here.

Like a small planet in an asteroid storm, the pockmarked city of Philadelphia has endured a blistering barrage of hits recently.

Last week, Philadelphia ranked 13th among the 23 Most Hair-Impaired Cities in America, according to Dean Banowetz, the stylist on American Idol.

Earlier this month, Sperling's BestPlaces said our town rated 60th out of 80 cities for dating, placing us among such love capitals as Cleveland and Indianapolis.

You want more punishment? Last month, we ranked last among the 10 Worst Cities in which to do business in America, according to Inc. magazine. (Best of the worst!)

In February, Men's Fitness magazine called us the seventh-fattest city in America. And last fall, Self magazine said Philadelphia was 180th out of 200 in the listing of healthiest areas of the country.

It's little wonder, then, that people here are quick to condemn themselves whenever someone with a questionnaire comes knocking.

"Our civic inferiority complex comes from a relentless history of the down-putting of Philadelphia," Farley says. "A thousand small hurts can accumulate into something significant in the self-concept of a city."

When the out-of-towners' ranking on "Good-Looking" put Philly 25th out of 25 cities, the local consensus was the same. And when the outsiders said we were 25th in style, our self-image was barely better: The score we gave ourselves ranked us 21st.

To be fair, the Travel + Leisure survey is a less-than-scientific approach. Who knows if the folks responding have ever been here? Still, it does seem to resonate. And that style thing seems to have stung the most.

"Philadelphia is very cosmopolitan," says Gary Ross, director at John Robert Powers Modeling. "People keep themselves stylish."

Similarly, Ellen Shepp, co-owner of Joan Shepp Boutique, is incredulous about the style demerits.

"We sell American and European collections, with my meat-and-potatoes running in the $300-to-$1,000 range," she says. "I have 10,000 people on my mailing list. All of these clothes are going somewhere."

Also, Shepp says, a walk through Center City would reveal flocks of good-looking, well-dressed folk. "I look at people on the street and say, 'Wow, they care.' "

It should not come as a surprise to long-suffering Philadelphians that, according to the survey, the city lost out to somewhat more exotic locales.

San Diego, Honolulu and San Francisco were named the cities with the most attractive people. New York, San Francisco and Las Vegas were counted among the most stylish - although anyone who has hung around a Vegas casino at 1 a.m. might beg to differ.

The friendliest people are said to live in Nashville, Honolulu and San Antonio.

So, to recap, we're hard on the eyes, fat, unfriendly, lacking style, unhealthy, nearly undatable, and bad at business.

Now, we can always fix the clothes. But ugly won't wash away.

Still, there's good news. We came in third - behind Washington and Boston - for top historical sites:

Philadelphia: Our Best Is Behind Us - along with our cheesesteak-sculpted posteriors.

As Farley says, "Philadelphia has a long way to go to get a more sophisticated reputation."

New to this Tribe thing -- but would like to try

I've just joined so this is quite new to me. Why no other members in Philly? I'm a transplanted New Yorker living in Center City for the past 16 years. Always very driven by my work, I"ve allowed my friends network to disintegrate and am looking to reestablish. That seems not so easy at age 54, married but no children.

I enjoy all the arts (theatre, ballet, movies, museums, orchestra) and get to NYC as often as possible. I also love to travel -- have been to Europe many times and hiked in Nepal. Have done a few cruises to destination points.

Anyone with similar interests to connect?
